Just had the pleasure and privilege to be in Hawaii for a week (they're low in covid and requiring negative tests for all incoming travelers, so there's some consensus here that is a safe trip to make from California). Thought I'd share some dots for your collection!!

Agreed, an important analysis of time and temporality of the pandemic - a period of all sorts of strange temporal compression and expansion I think - as seen through the streets themselves. Interesting how you dealt with a challenge that I also faced - the potential "pompeii effect" of piled up and outdated signage from well before the photo was taken - in part by being able to date signs contextually.

Great report. I find many interesting intersections with what I saw in signage in the US. (I didn't really consider which different languages appear on signs; certainly most are in English, though in Oakland many are in Spanish and Vietnamese as well.) I especially like the attention you pay to the difference between legal rules/laws and what are more like just "recommendations." I think this has been quite confusing in many places. Relatedly, interesting that the signage you observed often reads as though it's about adhering to official public health guidelines rather than being needed in response to the pandemic itself. I saw some of this too - and especially at shops and restaurants in more skeptical parts of the United States like Wyoming - but in places like Oakland and Chicago it almost seemed the opposite: the signage is there trying to get people to be safe for the sake of the shopkeepers, and in fact, anecdotally from just the past couple days (California officially "re-opened" on Tuesday), many shops and restaurants are continuing to require masks despite the fact that they are technically no longer required! Looking forward to discussing more!

Thanks for what it already a generative discussion about my presentation here folks! Yes I'm not surprised (based on what I've learned about DIY urbanism and all sorts of 'transgression' in public space) that this would be a somewhat 'American phenomenon'. I also do think Galey has a good point - not only were there never any hard restrictions on movement in the US, but in California, even with "shelter in place" orders and guidelines to, for example, not leave your own county, we were also explicitly encouraged to continue spending time outside, exercising, etc., and policies were put in place to encourage this even. Lastly, thanks to Susanna for thoughts on the type-over-time count... it is really pretty difficult to untangle whether there's anything meaningful there, especially because there is definitely, as indeed Monica pointed out helpfully above, a "Pompeii effect". I suspect it does reflect as much my own movements as changes over time. Not sure it's really even worth thinking about chronologically at all.

Thanks Eldin! I think you're right - it seems to be the consensus among commentors here that this may be something of an 'American' sociocultural phenomenon. Also, to your question - YES there has been a great outpouring support for the Asian American community across the Bay Area over the past few months, including signage, artwork, and monuments, and I've been photographing it; little of it that I've seen has made any connection to Covid safety, norms, etc. (despite the racist sentiment that attempted to connect Asians to the virus).
